U.S. Construction M&A — the busiest roll-up market in the lower middle market

62 lower-middle-market construction and specialty-trade transactions closed in the first half of 2026, concentrated in Texas, Florida and the Carolinas. HVAC, roofing, plumbing, civil/engineering and architecture roll-ups drove the volume, with strategic platforms — many of them sponsor-backed — executing serial add-ons.

Specialty trades are consolidating fast

Construction and specialty-trade consolidation was the busiest LMM theme nationally in H1 2026. Values are almost universally undisclosed, reflecting the tuck-in nature of these deals — so volume and buyer behavior tell the story. Architecture and engineering firms were a standout sub-theme, with several multi-firm platforms buying serially.

Most active acquirers in the period: Aeterna Group (4), Oklo (2), New Mountain Capital (2) and Ridgeline Roofing & Restoration (2). The Pacific Northwest showed up too, including Seattle and Portland-headquartered targets.
